This newsletter will try to cover it all 🕶️🖥️ But first, a quick dive into AI news of the last week: Pinterest rolls out genAI tools for product imagery to advertisers. Will A.I. Become the New McKinsey? AI Will Change Education 3 minutes vs. 10,000 years Google recently announced something straight out of a sci-fi movie: they achieved "quantum supremacy." This means their quantum computer did a task in just over 3 minutes that would take today's most powerful supercomputers about 10,000 years to complete. Yup, you read that right! 🖥️🤯 Source: Graham Carlow Photography So, how does this work? Regular computers use bits that are either a 1 or a 0. Quantum computers use qubits, which can be both 1 and 0 at the same time. A supercharged multitasking computer on steroids! The science behind it involves chilling metals to nearly -273c degrees below zero (brrr!) and leveraging the strange behaviors of subatomic particles. 🥶 It’s like harnessing the crazy antics of the tiniest building blocks of the universe to solve gigantic problems. Why It Matters 🌍 Quantum computing could supercharge artificial intelligence, making AI systems faster and more efficient. This tech could revolutionize cryptography. While it can bolster data security, it could also make current encryption methods obsolete. Quantum computers could help simulate molecular structures quickly, leading to breakthroughs in medicine and materials. In short, Google’s breakthrough doesn't just set them apart in the tech world; it propels all of us into an exciting future. While challenges remain, this quantum leap hints at a future where the unimaginable becomes possible. Get ready for a thrilling ride! Meta’s Smart Glasses Mystery: Are Your Photos Training Their AI? 🕶️ Let’s talk about Meta’s AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses. These are not your ordinary sunglasses. They have a tiny camera on the front that takes photos when you ask or via keywords like "look." Pretty cool, right? Or maybe not… Because the thing Meta isn't telling us, is if it uses these photos to train its AI models. When asked, a Meta exec and a spokesperson both dodged the question, simply saying, "We’re not discussing that." 🤔 Why is this a big deal? Because the glasses can take a lot of photos, many of which you might not even realize are being taken. For example, if you asked the glasses to scan your closet to help pick an outfit, they snap loads of pictures of your room too. These photos get uploaded to an AI model in the cloud, but what happens to them after that? Meta won't say. 😬 Why It Matters 🌍 This whole situation raises some serious privacy questions. Are our personal spaces and moments being used to train AI without clear consent? Without transparency, people might start feeling uneasy about using such innovative tech, potentially slowing down its adoption. Clear, honest communication about data usage can build trust and help tech evolve in a way that respects user privacy while pushing boundaries. So, Stay critical.
